Google Ads for Local Businesses: Getting More Calls From Nearby Customers

Location targeting, Business Profile, Local Services Ads and call tracking: how local businesses turn Google Ads into a steady stream of enquiries.

For local businesses such as plumbers, dentists, restaurants, gyms, solicitors and estate agents, Google Ads is one of the fastest ways to get the phone ringing. People searching for local services usually want help now, and they choose from what they see on the first screen. Here is how we set up Google Ads for local businesses so every click has a real chance of becoming a customer.

Get your location targeting right

Start by targeting the area you actually serve, using a radius around your premises or a list of towns and postcodes. Then check the location option in campaign settings. “Presence” (people in or regularly in your targeted locations) is usually the right choice for local services. The broader “presence or interest” option can show your ads to people hundreds of miles away who simply searched for your town.

Link your Google Business Profile

Linking your Google Business Profile to Google Ads unlocks location assets, which show your address, distance and a link to directions under your ads. It also makes your business eligible to appear in ads on Google Maps. Keep the profile complete and current, with accurate hours, photos, services and a steady flow of reviews, because people check it before they call.

Consider Local Services Ads

In supported countries and categories, Local Services Ads appear above regular search ads with a “Google Screened” or “Google Verified” badge. You pay per lead rather than per click, and leads arrive as calls or messages. They work particularly well for trades and home services. Getting verified takes some paperwork, but the extra trust and the pay-per-lead model often make it worthwhile alongside regular Search campaigns.

Bid on the searches that mean business

Local searches with strong intent include the service plus a location (“roofer in Leeds”), “near me” searches, and urgent modifiers such as “emergency”, “same day” or “open now”. These deserve your budget first. Broader research searches can come later once the core campaign is profitable.

Make calling easy

A large share of local customers would rather call than fill in a form. Add call assets to your ads, schedule them for hours when someone can answer, and make sure your phone number is prominent on your landing page, especially on mobile. Track calls as conversions with a minimum duration so you know which keywords produce real enquiries.

Use ad scheduling and bid adjustments

If you cannot answer the phone at 2am, there is little point paying for clicks then, unless you offer a genuine out-of-hours service. Use ad scheduling to focus budget on the hours you can respond. Look at performance by day and time after a few weeks and shift spend towards the periods that convert best.

Send people to a local landing page

A generic home page rarely converts as well as a page built for the service and area someone searched for. A good local landing page includes the service and location in the headline, clear pricing or a “from” price where possible, reviews from local customers, photos of your real team and work, and a single obvious call to action.

Reviews win clicks

Star ratings from your Business Profile and seller ratings can appear alongside your ads. Businesses with plenty of recent, positive reviews consistently earn higher click-through rates and lower costs. Asking every happy customer for a review is one of the best things you can do for your advertising.

A starting budget that makes sense

Local campaigns do not need huge budgets, but they need enough to gather data. Work out your typical cost per click, multiply by the clicks you need to get a handful of enquiries each week, and start there. Track cost per lead and, more importantly, how many of those leads become paying customers.

The bottom line

Local Google Ads succeed when targeting is tight, calls are easy, and the landing page speaks directly to people in your area. Get those basics right and Google Ads can become your most reliable source of new customers. If you run a local business and want more enquiries, talk to the WeWebMedia team.
