Google Shopping Ads: Why Your Product Feed Is Everything

Shopping campaigns have no keywords, so your Merchant Center feed decides when you show. How to optimise titles, attributes and structure for more sales.

For ecommerce businesses, Google Shopping is often the most profitable channel in the whole account. Shopping ads show your product image, price and store name right at the top of the results, so people click already knowing what they will get. The secret to Shopping success is not clever bidding. It is the product feed. Here is how we approach Shopping for our ecommerce clients.

Your feed is your keyword list

Shopping campaigns do not use keywords. Google decides when to show your products by reading the data in your Merchant Center feed: titles, descriptions, categories, brands, GTINs and attributes such as colour, size and material. If your feed is thin, your products will only show for a narrow set of searches. If it is rich and accurate, you will show for many more relevant queries.

Optimise product titles first

The title is the most important attribute. Put the most important information at the front, because only the first part is visible in most placements. A useful structure is brand, product type, key attribute, then variant, for example “Acme Waterproof Hiking Boots Men’s Brown Size 10”. Use the words your customers actually search for, not internal product codes or marketing names.

Fill in every attribute you can

  • GTINs help Google match your product to the right searches and are required for many branded items.
  • Google product category and your own product type help with relevance and campaign structure.
  • Colour, size, gender, age group and material help you show for more specific searches.
  • High-quality images on a clean background, with additional lifestyle images where allowed.
  • Sale price and shipping details so your offer looks competitive.

Keep Merchant Center healthy

Disapproved products earn nothing. Check the diagnostics tab every week for errors such as price mismatches, missing identifiers or policy issues. Automatic item updates help keep prices and stock levels in sync with your site, but they are no substitute for a reliable feed connection from your store platform.

Free listings are worth having

Merchant Center also powers free product listings on the Shopping tab and other Google surfaces. They will not replace paid ads, but they bring in extra traffic at no cost, so make sure they are switched on.

Standard Shopping or Performance Max?

Performance Max has largely replaced Smart Shopping and is now Google’s main recommendation for retailers. It can deliver strong results, especially with good conversion data. Standard Shopping campaigns still have a place when you need tighter control, want clear search term visibility, or are working with a limited budget. Many of our accounts run both, with PMax focused on growth and Standard Shopping used for specific product groups or testing.

Segment products by performance and margin

Not all products deserve the same budget. We use custom labels in the feed to group products by margin, price band, best sellers, seasonal lines or stock levels. That lets you set different ROAS targets for different groups, push high-margin products harder and stop low-margin items eating budget.

Use promotions and product ratings

Merchant promotions add a “special offer” link to your ads and can noticeably improve click-through rate. Product ratings show star reviews under your listing. Both make your products stand out on a crowded results page.

Watch the competition

Shopping is a visual price comparison. Use the price competitiveness report in Merchant Center to see how your prices compare with other retailers for the same products. Sometimes the biggest improvement to Shopping performance is a pricing or shipping decision rather than an advertising one.

The bottom line

Strong Shopping performance starts with a clean, detailed feed and a campaign structure that reflects your margins. Get those right and bidding becomes much easier. If your products are not showing as often as they should, the WeWebMedia team can audit your feed and campaigns.
